April 17, 2007 - Cold Core Bustola in NW TX

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chase Summary: I made it down to the Throckmorton, TX area, and drove around for a while looking at some mediocre storms before they quickly merged into a weakish squall line. Nothing very impressive happened in my area, although off to the west several cold core landspouts touched down on an occluded boundary east and north of Lubbock. Unfortunately I left Norman too late to make it out that far west in time. An interesting thing did happen on the way home - while merging onto I-35W northbound I noticed that the base of the weakish shelf cloud had gotten very low, and the shelf itself was much more vertical. This led me to believe that things were actually becoming surface based, and lots of low condensation started showing up all around me, pretty much on the ground; it was surreal. A tornado was reported at this time just to my south, and I do believe that something not completely outflow driven could have occurred. I didn't get any photos though, as I didn't see any serious rotation anywhere nearby. Some of the very low condensation/clouds did sort of look like updraft bases/non-rotating wall clouds, and I literally drove right through them; it was very interesting.
